Message After 19 years and 157,000 miles the rubber boot was shot and i had excessive play in the ball joint assembly

the ball joint assembly must be pressed out, it took a few hours to assemble all parts and develop this technique for the first side, the second side only took around 45 min.

Required tools
Basic hand tools, wrenches, socket set
Heat gun
tie rod end separator
short piece 1 1/4 inch diameter black pipe with end cap

tie rod press- available for rent at auto parts stores

First, remove the cotter pin, and nut, from assembly and remove tie rod with remover

remove locking bolt

The following set-up is used to press out the ball joint as the commercial press will not fit in the space available.

note the required nuts on the forward aspect of the assembly

now apply heat, i chose a heat gun as the surrounding metal is aluminum

making progress

success

New ball joint assembly with part number

Next apply a little silicone spray and use the tie rod press and an impact wrench to press the new ball joint into place

Replace locking bolt, nut, and cotter pin

Good luck!
